A Familiar Story

Remember when you got your first period and you didn’t know this new body that you were experiencing?

When every month you dreaded your period coming – drowning in the pain, the heavy blood loss, eating crap, swamped by the mood swings and soldiering through the daily grind?  And all the while, on the inside, you were silently screaming for help, popping pain killers to get through.

If you know this story all too well, then we’ve got a lot in common.

Because I was that girl.

Along the way I’ve learned a lot about menstrual health and proper period care.  I’m still learning and I marvel at the magic and wisdom that downloads every single month. I feel like I’ve been training and preparing all of these years to be able to now share it here with you, in my blog posts, on social media, through my guided meditations and consultations.

If we haven’t met before, I’m Marisa.  And I’m that trustworthy period geek friend you always wished could accompany you on your female journey.

My Mission

I believe that from the time of our menarche, our first period, we are being invited into an incredible spiritual practice that can expertly guide us through life if we allow space to recognise and respect our body and it’s natural rhythms.

Many of us may have forgotten our deep connection to the moon with its four lunar phases and may not know how to harness this energy with their menstrual cycle to create the life of their dreams. Our pelvis is a source of creation, a container of power, and when we return home to this power centre, we have the wisdom to create the lives we want.

My mission is to help women rediscover their bodies and reconnect with an ancient wisdom. The way we practice self care, how we massage our abdomens, select herbs to steam our vaginas with, care for our pregnant and postpartum bodies, the movement we make and the thoughts that we welcome all contribute to our reality.

This wisdom is not just for the women…the men in our lives need to know it too –  whether it’s to support their daughters, partners, mothers, female relatives or female colleagues.

It’s my dream that women everywhere have a monthly steaming practice and that every day they rub their bellies with a loving touch, igniting their power and dropping into their intuition.

I am an alternative menstrual health therapist and yoga teacher.  My journey of painful periods from the age of 11 initiated a journey of trial and error to get to where I am today – loving and embracing my menstrual cycle as my spiritual practice and fiercely passionate about empowering women to seek the menstrual health they deserve. My goal is to help you fall head over heels back in love with the Goddess within, to turn up the volume of your own inner guidance and wisdom.

I believe we came here to live a full life and share our unique gift with the world.

And I believe that we create our own menstrual and mental health through our self love practices.

I have to be honest with you, I haven’t always been on a spiritual journey – embracing my menstrual cycle and listening to the wisdom inside my womb. Raised in the UK in the 50s by Irish Catholic immigrants, my mother hadn’t exactly been nourished with much period talk or female empowerment messages so when, at aged 11, my period started while I was living in Zambia, I felt unprepared and with so many questions left unanswered.

The experience of my period was heavy and painful from the beginning. I quit the swim team because I couldn’t get my head around using tampons (I thought they had to be worn on the outside squeezed between the labia!) and decided like many girls – my period was a monthly curse to be endured and keep quiet about.  As with most teenagers I was put on the hormonal contraceptive pill which helped mask my symptoms of debilitating cramps into my early 20s when I went off the pill and faced the depths of my pain and symptoms.

I also realised how emotionally numb I had become whilst on the hormonal contraceptives and the cracks of life and light started to come back in.  Up until then I had been pursing a career in accountancy and decided to pack it all in and go traveling to Australia and India.  I got a sense something was missing in my life and began to pick up life skills along my travels that would become significant down the road (though this certainly wasn’t clear to me at the time) – massage therapist, yoga teacher, NLP practitioner and portrait photographer.

Thankfully during this painfully debilitating time I attended an evening workshop led by Red School and something ignited in me.  A seed was planted for me that periods didn’t have to be painful or surrounded by so much shame.  After this, I read every book I could get my hands on about menstrual health and period power and things started to shift, but it wasn’t the end of the road yet.  I still had the initiation of motherhood to survive through next.

At 29 I became a mother. Pre-eclampsia, an emergency c-section delivery (when I had my heart set on a home water birth), postnatal depression, high blood pressure and a depleted sex drive floored me.

It was my wake up call…
I realised I had to take back control of my health, my life and my happiness.

Being the curious researcher that I am, I set to work empowering myself with knowledge to support me on my journey.  I trained with Dr Brenda Davies for two years completing the Diploma in Spiritual Development where I learnt about the energy systems in the body and how to clear trauma blockages.

My blood pressure returned to normal and I made some big life decisions.  I moved countries with my daughter and husband from the UK to Turks & Caicos. I started teaching yoga regularly and trained as a Culinary Nutritionist.  For the first time in my life I was experiencing levels of wellness, fitness and happiness that were new to me.  It seemed like my life was on a wonderful new trajectory.  I got pregnant again and during my first scan I was diagnosed with a cyst on my left ovary.  I thought nothing of it until two years after the birth of my second daughter when the recurring abdominal pain got too much to ignore.  A scan confirmed the cyst was still there and not going anywhere so surgery was recommended.  The high blood pressure was also back and not showing any signs of shifting.

I got my second wake up call…

My maternal grandmother died at age 49 of cancer that started in her ovaries and my mother lost her whole uterus and ovaries at age 38 after stage three cancer developed in her uterus.  Surgery wasn’t an option in my mind.

I was determined to heal my womb naturally and get my health and life sorted.

It was a scary predicament to be facing, yet I knew in my generation I was equipped with different life skills. Through my studies of mind body medicine and my own continued self development work I was learning that everything is here to teach us something if we are open to the growth lesson. I began to recognise the power of the mind and the causes of disEASE in the body.  Life was offering me an opportunity,  so I set to work researching feminine health and discovered Keli Garza at the Peristeam Hydrotheraphy Institute in California.

A few minutes into my first steam I knew I had found the ancient wisdom I had been seeking all my life and a path that I had to go down.

I signed up for the vaginal steam facilitator course, devoured the information and began steaming daily. I became obsessed with learning and sharing everything I was realising. I could never have imagined what has unfolded for me since then, stuff beyond my wildest dreams.

My journey with steaming and healing my womb through massage, inner work, yoga and meditation continues as I’m working my way through the Peristeam Hydrotheraphy training, and have trained in Abdominal Therapy with the Abdominal Therapy Collective. I circled back to Red School, nearly 20 years later and completed their Menstruality Leadership Training in 2023 which has helped me make sense of everything and reinforced my calling to teach women what I know.  I have moved my family back across the Atlantic and settled in Hampshire, UK and am so excited at this new chapter that is opening up.

I would love to welcome you to travel on this path with me. My goal is to empower you in your menstrual health and womb wisdom.

When I began this journey I sure as hell didn’t love my period, but I have learnt how to fall in love with it, to understand it, connect with my body’s rhythms and to truly care for myself. It has become a spiritual practice.

I would love to share this journey of mastering your womb wisdom, transforming your period through proper period care and cyclical awareness, and falling wildly in love with yourself.

If you are still reading, thank you.  I’m so excited to support your growth.  The best way to stay up to date is by joining the tribe at the bottom of this page.

A percentage of all consultation fees will go towards VisionZambia who support a woman’s group in Zambia to make reusable sanitary pads for the women of Linda Compound and beyond. Many young girls in Zambia miss out on education due to the lack of adequate sanitary ware.

In supporting these women, VisionZambia is helping the wider community because it is the women who care for neighbours, nourish the children and nurture the land. It is my hope that these women’s groups will continue to organise themselves, receive the training they need and pass it on to their friends, and to save enough money to support their own development in the future.
